General Motors plans to use carbon fiber wheels on Cadillac and other models

Date:2016-09-02 17:17

William Rodgers, a researcher at GM's Lightweight Polymer Research Institute, told Autoblog that the carmaker wants to introduce carbon fiber wheels as an option for its top performance car .

For now, GM may cooperate with Australian Carbon Revolution, a manufacturer of carbon fiber wheels, for Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R and the forthcoming 2017 Ford GT, which can be equipped with Transparent coated five-spoke carbon fiber wheels.

GM's Rogers points out that the use of carbon fiber materials can reduce the weight of about 35 pounds of vehicles, which greatly reduces the wheel and body weight, but also can improve vehicle power performance. "It's a very effective way to improve the dynamics of the car," Rogers told Autoblog.

Now, GM is carrying out wheel wear test, in order to understand the performance of carbon fiber wheels in daily driving. Rogers said that the vast majority of cases, the wear of carbon fiber wheels must be completely replaced, because the repair of such wheels is extremely difficult. Ford Mustang GT350 carbon fiber wheels can reduce the total weight of about 58 pounds of cars, but the replacement cost of each wheel will be more than 4,000 US dollars.

If GM decides to continue with its composite (carbon fiber) wheels, the products will be installed on Cadillac V, the top Corvette Z06 and Camaro Z28s.
